TEMPORARY CLOSURE NOTICE Cedar Roe Library Closed Oct. 27 – Dec. 29, 2019
A New Roof is Being Installed; will re-open Mon. Dec. 30, 9:00 a.m.
Johnson County Library will be making some upgrades and improvements to Cedar Roe Library, 5120 Cedar St., Roeland Park, KS. The branch will be closed Oct. 27 - Dec. 29, 2019, for installation of a new roof and deep cleaning. The branch will reopen Mon. Dec. 30 at 9:00 a.m.
After Oct. 26, Cedar Roe patron "holds" will be shifted automatically to Antioch Library during the closure. Patrons may also choose to suspend holds or select another location.
Library programs like Storytime will be moved to other locations for the duration of the closure.
No returns will be accepted at Cedar Roe during the closure. The closest branch for returns and full library service is Antioch at 8700 Shawnee Mission Parkway, Merriam. eLibrary resources are also available 24/7.
The Johnson County Library board approved $58,391 for the project as part of the ongoing implementation of the 2015 Comprehensive Library Master Plan, according to Jennifer Mahnken, the Library’s Associate Director for Branch Services. “Cedar Roe Library has been a vital fixture of Roeland Park for 50 years, and the building is in need of important repairs,” said Mahnken. “We’re glad to invest in this branch so patrons receive top service for many more years to come.”
FAQs:
Why 2 months to install a new roof at Cedar Roe?
If we’re accustomed to residential roofing projects finished in a couple of days, this time period could seem a bit lengthy. The points to consider are:
- We’re addressing a commercial-scale roof that has some age, and must be completely removed;
- Roof work is weather dependent, so the exact time to complete the work may vary, and we have been deliberately generous in our duration estimate;
- Our insurance company requires submission/approval of materials and procedures, overseen by our County Risk Manager. This adds time to the entire process;
- Because there will be a lot of equipment and material temporarily stored and in motion on the property, we determined to close the building during the process for patron, staff and collection safety.
All of those points taken together, it seemed prudent for us to close the building to best accomplish this work.
What’s up with the "deep cleaning"?
During the closure we will complete some minor deferred maintenance/repairs that have accumulated over time: issues typical to a public building that sees as much use as does Cedar Roe. Our buildings are well maintained and regularly cleaned, AND we’ll take advantage of this service down-time to deep clean carpets and other surfaces before reopening so that our patrons can enjoy a building that’s refreshed inside and out.
